Universiti Utara Malaysia is a public management university in Sintok, Kedah, Malaysia, known for its specialization in management education and its green campus environment.
Universiti Utara Malaysia (UUM), established on February 16, 1984, is a public management university located in Sintok, Kedah, Malaysia, recognized for its specialization in management education. Its sprawling main campus, often referred to as \"The University in a Green Forest,\" is set amidst lush tropical forests and is watered by the Sungai Sintok and Sungai Badak rivers, providing a serene environment for learning [1, 4, 5, 10, 17]. UUM is committed to academic excellence and is the sixth public university established in Malaysia, with a vision to be a leading public university of management recognized for its global impact [1, 13].
As of October 2024, UUM boasts a total student enrollment of 30,149, including both undergraduate and postgraduate students, making it one of the largest government universities in Malaysia [7, 8, 9]. The university prides itself on its diverse student body, with individuals from nearly 100 countries worldwide, fostering a rich multicultural environment [9]. UUM's commitment to quality education is underscored by its AACSB International accreditation, a prestigious recognition held since 2016, placing it among the top business schools globally [16].
The university's academic structure comprises three main academic colleges: the College of Business (UUM COB), the College of Arts and Sciences (UUM CAS), and the College of Law, Government and International Studies (UUM COLGIS), which were formed in January 2008 from the merger of 13 faculties [10, 15]. These colleges offer a broad spectrum of academic programs geared towards providing comprehensive knowledge and intellectual skills in management-related areas, business, social sciences, and information technology [9, 16]. UUM's dedication extends beyond academics, offering numerous facilities and services, including 17 student residential halls capable of accommodating around 20,000 students, ensuring adequate and comfortable living arrangements [5, 10].
The inception of Universiti Utara Malaysia (UUM) dates back to August 1983, when the Ministry of Education Malaysia initiated \"The Sixth University Project\" with a specific focus on management education. Cabinet approval for the project in Kedah was granted on October 19, 1983. Subsequently, the temporary office of UUM was officially opened on February 15, 1984, in Jitra [4, 5].
Four months after its initial opening, in June 1984, the UUM office relocated to its provisional Darul Aman Campus in Jitra, a 62-acre site, to welcome its first batch of students. Concurrently, planning commenced for a permanent, larger campus. This permanent campus, known as the Sintok Campus, spans 1,061 hectares in Sintok, Kubang Pasu district, and began operations on September 15, 1990 [4, 5].
The Sintok Campus, a former tin mining area, was officially opened on February 17, 2004, by the Royal Chancellor, His Royal Highness Sultan Abdul Halim Mu’adzam Shah, following an investment of MYR580 million. In January 2008, a significant academic restructuring merged 13 faculties into three main academic colleges: UUM College of Business, UUM College of Arts and Sciences, and UUM College of Law, Government and International Studies, aiming to strengthen its postgraduate programs and international standing [4, 5, 10]. UUM also obtained AACSB International accreditation in 2016, a testament to its excellence in business education [16].
Universiti Utara Malaysia's academic programs are structured under three main academic colleges, a result of a significant restructuring in January 2008 where thirteen faculties were merged. These colleges are the UUM College of Business (UUM COB), the UUM College of Arts and Sciences (UUM CAS), and the UUM College of Law, Government and International Studies (UUM COLGIS) [10, 15]. This structure is designed to provide comprehensive education across various management-related disciplines.
The UUM College of Business (UUM COB) is a cornerstone of the university, focusing on a broad spectrum of business-related programs. This college offers numerous undergraduate and postgraduate degrees in areas such as Accounting, Finance, Marketing, Entrepreneurship, Human Resource Management, and Operations Management, aligning with UUM's specialization in management education [9, 16]. Its programs aim to equip graduates with strong leadership qualities for effective resource planning and management.
The UUM College of Arts and Sciences (UUM CAS) and the UUM College of Law, Government and International Studies (UUM COLGIS) expand the university's academic offerings beyond core business. UUM CAS provides programs in disciplines like Computer Science, Information Technology, Economics, Communication, Statistics, and Mathematics, while UUM COLGIS covers fields such as Law, Public Management, and International Affairs [9, 10, 14, 15]. These colleges ensure a diverse and interdisciplinary academic environment, supporting UUM's mission to produce well-rounded graduates.
