Universiti Malaysia Pahang Al-Sultan Abdullah (UMPSA) is a public technical university in Malaysia specializing in engineering and technology.
Universiti Malaysia Pahang Al-Sultan Abdullah (UMPSA), formerly known as Universiti Malaysia Pahang (UMP), is a prominent public technical university located in Pahang, Malaysia. Established in 2002, UMPSA offers a diverse range of high-quality academic programs in engineering, technology, applied sciences, computing, and business at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels [1, 2]. The university is committed to providing a practical, hands-on learning experience, utilizing state-of-the-art laboratories and fostering strong collaborations with industries [2].
UMPSA's strategic location within the East Coast Industrial Belt of Peninsular Malaysia provides students with extensive exposure to the latest developments in engineering and technology fields, particularly within multinational corporations in the chemical, petrochemical, manufacturing, automotive, and biotechnology industries [2]. The institution focuses on applied research and industrial projects, enriching its teaching and learning modules while promoting the commercialization of research outputs [2].
With a vision to be a leading technological university, UMPSA aims to achieve excellence through academic empowerment and impactful research, producing outstanding graduates who contribute significantly to national development. The university also emphasizes character development, leadership, and lifelong learning, preparing its graduates to be confident and ethical leaders in their respective fields [2].
Universiti Malaysia Pahang Al-Sultan Abdullah was initially established as Kolej Universiti Kejuruteraan & Teknologi Malaysia (KUKTEM), a technical university, on February 16, 2002 [1, 2]. Its founding was a result of the Malaysian government's initiative to create a competency-based technical university specializing in engineering and technology [2].
After five years of operation, the Malaysian government officially announced the renaming of KUKTEM to Universiti Malaysia Pahang (UMP), a change that became effective on February 1, 2007 [2]. This rebranding marked a significant milestone in the university's growth and development within the Malaysian academic landscape.
On April 14, 2023, the university underwent another rebranding, officially becoming Universiti Malaysia Pahang Al-Sultan Abdullah (UMPSA). This latest change, based on the Universiti Malaysia Pahang Order (Incorporation) (Amendment) 2023 (P.U. (A) 116/2023), honors His Royal Highness, The Sultan of Pahang, Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri’ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah, who serves as the university's Chancellor [2].
UMPSA boasts a comprehensive range of faculties and centers that underpin its strong focus on engineering and technology. The main campus in Pekan is home to the Faculty of Electrical and Electronics Engineering Technology, Faculty of Mechanical and Automotive Engineering Technology, Faculty of Manufacturing and Mechatronic Engineering Technology, Faculty of Computing, and the Centre for Modern Languages [2].
The Gambang campus further expands the university's academic offerings, housing the Faculty of Civil Engineering Technology, Faculty of Chemical and Process Engineering Technology, Faculty of Industrial Sciences and Technology, Faculty of Industrial Management, Institute of Postgraduates Studies, Centre for Mathematical Sciences, and Centre for Human Sciences [2].
These faculties collectively offer a wide array of programs in disciplines such as mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, computer engineering, chemical engineering, industrial biotechnology, information technology, and business administration, preparing students with specialized knowledge and practical skills for various industries [2, 4].
