The genesis of Open University Malaysia (OUM) can be traced back to August 1999, when the Minister of Education initiated the establishment of an open university in Malaysia. This call was answered by Multimedia Technology Enhancement Operations Sdn. Bhd. (METEOR), a consortium formed by 11 Malaysian public universities, leading to OUM's official founding in August 2000.
