The International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM) is a public university in Malaysia established in 1983, integrating Islamic principles with a broad spectrum of academic disciplines.
The International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM) stands as a prominent public institution in Malaysia, distinguished by its commitment to integrating Islamic values with contemporary academic pursuits. Established in 1983, IIUM offers a diverse range of undergraduate, master's, and doctoral programs across its numerous faculties, known as \"Kulliyyahs.\" The university's unique educational philosophy, often referred to as \"The Garden of Knowledge and Virtue,\" aims to cultivate well-rounded individuals who excel academically while upholding strong moral and ethical principles. Its main campus, located in Gombak, Selangor, provides a conducive learning environment with modern facilities and a rich, multicultural student body drawn from over 100 countries worldwide. [1, 5, 8]
IIUM emphasizes a holistic approach to education, fostering intellectual and spiritual growth. The university's curriculum is designed not only to impart specialized knowledge in various fields but also to instill a deep understanding of Islamic perspectives and their application in diverse areas of life. This integration is evident in its research endeavors, which often focus on addressing contemporary challenges through an Islamic lens, contributing to both academic advancement and societal well-being. [7, 8]
Beyond its academic offerings, IIUM is recognized for its vibrant campus life and commitment to community engagement. The university requires all foundation and undergraduate students to participate in \"Usrah,\" Islamic study circles aimed at social, spiritual, and intellectual development, and also encourages community service through its \"Usrah in Action\" program. These initiatives reflect IIUM's dedication to producing graduates who are not only competent professionals but also responsible citizens with strong ethical foundations. [6]
The genesis of the International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM) can be traced back to 1982, when Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad conceived the idea for an international Islamic educational institution during a meeting of Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) leaders. This vision was rooted in the broader movement of \"Islamization of knowledge,\" aiming to create a university that harmoniously blended religious and secular disciplines. Key figures like Ismail al-Faruqi played an instrumental advisory role in its foundation, advocating for an educational system that fostered intellectual and cultural development within the Muslim world by integrating Islamic values with modern academic fields. [6]
Initially, IIUM was incorporated as a private university due to Malaysian laws prohibiting Malay as the sole language of instruction, with English and Arabic being chosen as primary mediums. However, it was officially established as a public university on May 23, 1983, following an establishment order from the then King, Ahmad Shah of Pahang, and co-sponsorship agreements with the Malaysian government and seven other governments, along with the OIC. This pivotal moment marked its formal recognition and paved the way for its growth as a leading Islamic institution. [4, 6]
The first academic session commenced on July 8, 1983, with an initial intake of 153 students from Malaysia and various international locations. These pioneering students were enrolled in faculties such as Economics, Laws, and foundational knowledge centers, laying the groundwork for the university's comprehensive academic structure. Since its inception, IIUM has consistently expanded its reach and offerings, evolving into a distinguished institution that has produced tens of thousands of graduates from over 100 countries, contributing significantly to diverse fields globally while upholding its founding Islamic principles. [6]
The International Islamic University Malaysia boasts 14 faculties, known as \"Kulliyyahs,\" each contributing to its comprehensive academic landscape and unique educational philosophy. Among these, the Ahmad Ibrahim Kulliyyah of Laws (AIKOL) is notable, offering rigorous legal education integrated with Islamic jurisprudence, producing graduates well-versed in both conventional and Shariah law. The Kulliyyah of Economics and Management Sciences (KENMS) focuses on economic principles and business administration, often incorporating Islamic finance and ethical considerations into its curriculum, reflecting the university's core values. [7, 8]
The AbdulHamid AbuSulayman Kulliyyah of Islamic Revealed Knowledge and Human Sciences (AHAS KIRKHS) serves as a cornerstone of IIUM's mission, providing in-depth studies in Islamic revealed knowledge alongside various human sciences such as communication, political science, psychology, and sociology. This Kulliyyah plays a crucial role in fostering an integrated understanding of knowledge. Complementing these are the Kulliyyahs of Engineering and Information and Communication Technology (KICT), which offer modern technological and scientific education, ensuring that students are equipped with up-to-date skills while maintaining an ethical framework. [7, 8]
Further extending its academic breadth, IIUM also houses Kulliyyahs dedicated to Medicine, Dentistry, Allied Health Sciences, Science, and Nursing, primarily located at its Kuantan campus, providing comprehensive health and medical education. The Kulliyyah of Architecture and Environmental Design (KAED) and the Kulliyyah of Education also represent significant areas of study, emphasizing sustainable practices and holistic pedagogical approaches. These diverse faculties collectively enable IIUM to offer a wide array of programs, from law and economics to engineering and health sciences, all underpinned by its distinctive Islamic ethos. [7, 8]
