Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur was established by an Act of Parliament in 1960 by the Government of India, though its operations began in December 1959. Initially, the institute was housed in a room at the Harcourt Butler Technological University in Kanpur. In March 1963, IIT Kanpur relocated to its current 1,000-acre campus on the Grand Trunk Road near Kalyanpur, designed by architect Achyut Kanvinde with an emphasis on environmental freedom and ease of movement. During its initial decade, from 1962 to 1972, IIT Kanpur received substantial technical assistance through the Kanpur Indo-American Programme (KIAP). This collaborative effort involved a consortium of nine prominent US universities, including MIT, University of California at Berkeley, and Princeton University, which played a crucial role in developing the institute's research laboratories and academic programs. Under the guidance of economist John Kenneth Galbraith, IIT Kanpur became the first institute in India to introduce computer science education in August 1963, utilizing an IBM 1620 system. The Electrical Engineering department initiated this pioneering effort, which led to the establishment of an independent Computer Science and Engineering academic program offering MTech and PhD degrees by 1971.
