Sanjay Aggarwal Interview Notes

About Sanjay Aggarwal’s background. My father started Paramount Communications back in the 50s. At that time, there was a great deal of lack of resources in India, there were hard times indeed. The context was very limited, especially in the field my father started his company, with few companies coping the market. The business was about producing cables and connecting homes across India.

When I started working in the company, in the 80s, the turnover of the company was a few million rupees. It was a time where there were big things happening in India, opening up to the world. My job was to take care of the company. I brought in new ideas, developing new products and I was able to successfully list the company on the stock exchange. Under my leadership we have been able to grow ever since to become a leading cable manufacturer company in India: from a Rs 1 crore small scale industrial unit to one of the largest cable manufacturers in India.

We have expanded our core business. We are now developing submarine cables. In fact, we were in charge of the connection between Sri Lanka and India. We have also acquired the oldest cable company in the world in 2007 to keep growing our business.

These are just some of the solutions we have provided. We are very proud of the work we have done and what we have achieved over the years.

Challenges facing entrepreneurs in India. The 90s was a great time in India. The opening of the country to the world, foreign capital came into the country and the growth was felt in the homes too. There were many challenges for entrepreneurs, of course. From my position, I have been very active and in close contact with the government, chambers of commerce and other associations to fight for entrepreneurs and SMEs. I thought that I could help them and become a representative of them, that is why I became the President of PHDCCI. One of the latest challenges has been the COVID-19 pandemic. When it happened, many business owners and companies were left with so many problems they haven’t faced before. So through my work on the PHDCCI we have been able to help many businesses, helping them work in other regional areas, with digitization, getting financial aid, etc. This disaster is actually making us think out of the box and even finding new opportunities.

About the PHD Chamber of Commerce. It was founded back when India was still a British colony. Over the years, the chamber kept growing and expanding to different regions within India, to a total of 33 now. Our ethos is based on progress and modernization, advising and supporting companies since our inception. We are their representatives, we talk on behalf of our companies. Our major efforts are regarding policy and as a contact point between businesses and the government. We also have a strong focus on skilling, providing different educational programs for our members.

Something that really makes us stand apart is that we are focused on SMEs. Whereas other chambers of commerce focus on industries, we support SMEs. With 130,000 companies as our members base, PHD Chamber is a major organisation focused on the development of small and medium businesses. We strongly believe in modernization and we have an open mind regarding new trends, technologies and processes.

Doing business in India. India is one of the most inviting countries to do business. We have a stable political environment, the rule of law defines our democracy and that provides the stability businesses need. We also have a huge market. We are going to become the third largest economy in the world in the next 10 years. And at the same time there is still much to be done, we are still getting there and there are still gaps in the market that businesses are slowly coping with.
