Here are some of the latest stories in AI that showcase its diverse impact across different sectors.

Lionsgate Partners with Runway for GenAI

Lionsgate, the renowned film company behind franchises like The Hunger Games and John Wick, has a partnership with AI video generation company Runway. This partnership aims to create a custom AI model specifically trained on Lionsgate’s extensive film catalogue. The model is designed to generate cinematic video content that filmmakers can further refine using Runway’s tools.

Lionsgate sees this partnership as a smart way to use AI to improve both pre-production and post-production processes. The custom model will help the studio’s creative teams find new ways to create content, giving them more flexibility and efficiency in making high-quality videos. For Runway, this partnership is a big step forward as they work on offering similar custom AI models to individual creators, making advanced filmmaking tools more accessible to everyone.

“Runway is a visionary, best-in-class partner who will help us utilise AI to develop cutting edge, capital efficient content creation opportunities,” said Lionsgate Vice Chair Michael Burns.

“Several of our filmmakers are already excited about its potential applications to their pre-production and post-production process. We view AI as a great tool for augmenting, enhancing and supplementing our current operations.”

This partnership is one of the first major collaborations between an AI startup and a Hollywood studio, possibly shaping the future of film production. As the entertainment industry explores the impact of AI, this alliance could encourage more studios to adopt AI in their creative workflows.

Start Selling to Enterprises with a Few Lines of Code

WorkOS, a leading user management platform, is simplifying the integration of enterprise-grade features for AI companies. With APIs designed for B2B SaaS, WorkOS allows businesses to implement single sign-on (SSO), a system for cross-domain identity management (SCIM), fine-grained access (FGA), and audit logs within minutes. The platform also offers free user management for up to one million monthly active users, including features such as role-based access control (RBAC), multi-factor authentication (MFA), bot protection, and social logins.

By providing high-quality documentation and self-serve onboarding, WorkOS reduces the complexity of integrating these essential features, enabling AI companies like Perplexity, Jasper, and Cursor to focus on scaling their operations. This initiative is poised to empower more startups and established firms to enhance their enterprise offerings without the typical development overhead.

YouTube Launches AI-Powered Creation Tools

YouTube has introduced a range of AI-powered features designed to support creators in producing engaging content. These include text-to-video generation, AI-powered inspiration tools, and automated dubbing capabilities. The AI video generation tool, named Veo, enables creators to generate six-second video clips for YouTube Shorts using text prompts. All AI-generated content will be watermarked and labelled accordingly.

YouTube’s new AI-powered "Inspiration" features assist creators in brainstorming video ideas and suggesting responses to comments, fostering more interactive and engaging content creation. Additionally, the platform is expanding its AI dubbing capabilities, allowing for more natural translations by mimicking the original audio’s pitch and intonation. These advancements are part of YouTube's ongoing effort to enhance creativity and expand accessibility for creators across the globe.

Virtually Try-On Any Clothes in Just a Few Clicks

Kolors, an AI-powered virtual try-on tool, is revolutionising the way people shop online. Available on Hugging Face, this free tool allows users to upload a photo of themselves and a garment image to see how the outfit would look on them virtually. The tool provides a simple and interactive way to experiment with different styles and outfits, making online shopping more engaging and personalised.

To use the tool, users need to upload a clear, front-facing photo of themselves along with an image of the garment they wish to try on. After running the tool, they can see a visual representation of how the garment fits and looks, helping them make more informed purchasing decisions.

Free Event: Fireside Chat on How AI Elevates Creativity

Sony AI’s Chief Scientist, Dr. Peter Stone, will be hosting a free fireside chat discussing the transformative impact of AI on the creative process. The event will explore AI's role in automating mundane tasks, thereby allowing artists and creators to focus on more creative aspects of their work. Dr. Stone will delve into ethical considerations around AI-assisted art, it's potential to improve the quality of creative outputs, and how AI can help maintain a flow state for artists.

The event is scheduled for September 25, 2024, at 2 p.m. ET and promises to provide valuable insights for anyone interested in the intersection of AI and creativity.

Google Uses AI to Understand Whales

Google has unveiled an AI-powered whale bioacoustics model capable of identifying eight whale species, including Bryde's whales, whose mysterious “Biotwang” sounds were only recently attributed to them by NOAA researchers. The model, which can also recognise multiple vocalisation types for two species, was developed to aid conservation efforts, enabling researchers to study whale populations in remote environments by analysing long-term underwater acoustic recordings.

This new model builds upon Google’s previous work in whale classification, which started in 2018 with a focus on humpback whales. Over the years, it has expanded through collaborations with organisations like NOAA and the Department of Fisheries and Oceans, Canada. By classifying the vocalisations of several whale species, the model is set to provide valuable insights into their behaviour, migration patterns, and population structures.

Google’s whale model has been made publicly available via Kaggle Models, enabling researchers and conservationists to use it for real-time analysis and species identification. It also comes with the flexibility to apply to other cetacean species, helping researchers explore new whale vocalisations and species that have yet to be studied in-depth.
