The survey reveals a growing trend among Gen-Z to embrace budget-friendly gifting methods without compromising on the sentiment behind their gestures. According to the survey findings:
- Budget-friendly spending: A significant 77% of Gen Z respondents reported spending £50 or less per person on gifts, with nearly 40% maintaining a tighter range of £26–£50. Only 9.3% were willing to exceed the £100 mark.
- Emphasising thoughtfulness: Around 43.9% prioritise small but meaningful gifts, showcasing an intent to offer items of emotional rather than monetary value.
- The shift to shared experiences: Approximately 22.9% are replacing traditional presents with experiences such as movie nights or hiking trips, while 13.2% are focusing on quality time instead of physical gifts.
According to Cindy Lim, Head of Brand at Yuzu, "We’re seeing a shift in how Gen-Z approaches the holidays. This generation is showing us that heartfelt connections can outshine expensive gifts, redefining what it means to celebrate during tough economic times."
Spending smarter: The rise of budget-savvy gifting

- Setting financial boundaries: More than 65% of respondents disclosed setting spending limits with friends or family to alleviate financial stress, with 23.9% doing so consistently every year.
- Creative money-saving solutions: Nearly three-quarters (74.7%) are relying on sales and discounts to stay within budget, while 40.1% choose to gift experiences instead of material items. DIY gifts (34.3%) and hosting potluck-style gatherings (27.1%) are also becoming popular alternatives.
Gratitude beyond materialism

- Spending quality time: For 44.2%, the most meaningful way to express appreciation is by spending quality time with friends.
- Heartfelt gestures: Writing notes or heartfelt messages (20.7%) and preparing homemade meals (17%) also emerged as preferred ways to show care during the festive season.
A generational reset in holiday traditions

Rising inflation and economic uncertainty have not dampened their holiday spirit. Instead, Gen Z is leading a broader reset of traditional practices, embracing intentionality, frugality, and a focus on shared moments over material excess.
"Gen Z isn’t letting financial constraints dampen their holiday spirit. Instead, they’re proving that the best gifts come from the heart," added Cindy Lim.
