Members of The Planet Mark sustainability certification have cut their absolute carbon emissions by an average of 12 percent in 2019, compared with six percent in 2018, protecting 124 acres of rainforest, which is an area equivalent to over 1,900 tennis courts.  In addition, the member carbon reduction success rate stands at 99.2 percent.  This marks an achievement that is ahead of emissions targets listed in the Paris agreement, which is 7.6 percent every year until 2030.

According to The Planet Mark’s third Impact Report, members that have been awarded The Planet Mark have increased by 17 percent in 2019 to 854, up from 728 in 2018.  In addition, the average tonnes of carbon reduction per employee have been cut by a further two percent, to 16 percent, compared to 14 percent in 2018.  In the new development certification for industrial and office buildings, the average reduction in whole life tonnes of carbon has gone from 20 percent in 2018 to 21 percent in 2019.  Furthermore, 30,000 tonnes of carbon were saved from 2018.

In addition to carbon measurement, The Planet Mark measures social value as a complete mark of sustainability.  The same rigorous methodology to measuring businesses’ environmental impact is now applied to quantify the impact of their social activities across the categories of:  Your People;  Community and Volunteering;  Donations;  Procurement, and Environmental Impacts.

Since its inception in 2018 when the total social value measured stood at £7.7 million, in 2019 the community delivered over £238 million in social value contributions.

Steve Malkin, CEO and founder of The Planet Mark, comments, “This Impact Report celebrates the work of organisations and their people who have chosen to act.  Organisations which have chosen to go beyond compliance and put the future of our planet at the heart of what they do.  We thank those organisations which have chosen to be part of The Planet Mark community.  These results show they are radically reducing their carbon emissions, enhancing their contributions to society and communities they serve.  We have the power and influence to make a lasting change.  What we do now will shape our present and our future, for our planet and our civilisation.  It is in the balance, and it is in our hands.”

The Planet Mark sustainability certification recognises continuous progress, encourages action, and builds an empowered community of like-minded individuals.  Companies are certified immediately when they sign up based on their commitment to sustainability progress.  To retain The Planet Mark, the organisation must reduce their carbon footprint every year, which is measured with rigour across five categories:  building, travel, waste, water, and procurement;  commit to engage their staff, and communicate their progress externally.  In addition, businesses’ social value is measured across five categories:  your people, community and volunteering, donations, procurement, and environmental impacts.
